Reading, Phonics & Spelling Curriculum

phonics spelling

At St. Peter’s we currently follow the highly regarded ‘Read Write Inc.’ scheme for phonics from Ruth Miskin. This is a systematic approach for teaching EYFS and KS1 children to read and write, and offers support for older children to catch up quickly if needed.

To ensure our Literacy teaching is as consistent as possible our children move on to the ‘Read Write Inc.’ scheme for spelling once they have completed their phonics learning. This is a systematic programme which puts the focus on learning spelling patterns and rules, rather than weekly lists of words. As each year group progresses, more complicated rules are introduced as well as children having the opportunity to ensure they have learned the high frequency words mandated by the National Curriculum.
