1. Characteristics of Effective learning

Curriculum Overview

2. Areas of Learning and Development

At St Peters we teach all of the areas of learning through a topic based approach. Through the year we will cover seasonal topics such as Autumn, Christmas, Winter, Spring, but also topics taken from the children’s interests such as dinosaurs, space, pets, castles, machines, mini beasts and more!

The RE curriculum (Come and See) is also taught through topics, these include

Myself, Welcome, Advent, Celebrations, Gathering, Growing, Easter, Good News and Our World

We teach phonics for reading and writing on a daily basis in small groups.

The scheme we use is Read Write Inc by Ruth Miskin

Our handwriting scheme is called Pen Pals

We also teach maths through short interactive small group sessions which we call ‘Mini Maths’

The children play and learn independently using the activities put out for them by the EYFS team. They are encouraged to develop their learning, challenge themselves and use what they have learnt (during small groups) in their play. Adults are available to question, prompt and teach as the children access the activities.

If a child is finding it difficult to learn, staff identify the problem and put some ‘one to one’ work in place to help the child make small steps of progress.
